Strong experience in burner systems
ANDRITZ’s burner technology expertise goes back a long way. In 2020, ANDRITZ acquired Finnish Enviroburners Ltd., which was established more than 40 years ago. Today, ANDRITZ supplies burner systems to its own pulp industry projects and to applications in other industrial sectors, such as the energy industry, metallurgy and the process industry.
Burner systems are used for heat and energy production and treatment of materials that are harmful to the environment. In a pulp plant, burner technology helps minimize odors generated by the plant. The odorous gases are treated by burner systems, with any useful compounds recovered whenever possible.
ANDRITZ offers solutions for meeting strict requirements
The emergence of renewable energy sources and recycled fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels poses new challenges to the development of systems. “When the product being incinerated differs from conventional fuel, achieving efficient and emission-free burning poses challenges to burner design,” explains Product Director Perttu Jukola, adding: “ANDRITZ’s technology enables the utilization of the energy bound in waste: waste is used to generate gas for burning, which in turn will generate heat or electricity.”
Restrictions set on carbon dioxide emissions are becoming more strict, which means that burner technology must be developed further. A major advance is anticipated in the form of a hybrid burner that will be able to utilize either fuel or electricity, depending on the situation.
“We have to prepare for future developments, such as the electrification of industry and hydrogen technologies, which will also have an impact on burner design,” shares Jukola.
Makron’s expertise sways the decision
Makron is ANDRITZ’s long-term partner in mechanical engineering, production, and industrial automation. When Enviroburners merged with ANDRITZ, Makron was a strong candidate for a collaboration partner in the design of burner systems. The company had previous experience with ANDRITZ’s design environment, which helped sway the decision in its favor. At the early stages of the collaboration, Makron’s team could support ANDRITZ’s burner designers by sharing their experiences of tried-and-tested practices.
“Design expertise is in continuous demand as almost all projects involve some degree of customization,” observes Technology Manager Marko Kylä-Sipilä. The companies work together to design ANDRITZ’s core technologies: burners and valve groups related to them. Makron offers ANDRITZ a comprehensive service package, from modelling to manufacturing drawings.
“When collaboration gets off to a good start and trust is created, it is easy to build on,” notes Perttu Jukola.
″We have good communication between us, and Makron has succeeded in arranging design resources whenever we have needed them.″
