ANDRITZ Savonlinna Works Oy’s factory produces pulp and paper industry machines for ANDRITZ’s projects in all parts of the world. To be able to manufacture pressure vessels for the North American market, Savonlinna Works has acquired the ASME certificate. Makron carries out ASME-compliant design and technical calculations for the company.
“We can offer competitive services when challenging pieces and products are needed for the North American market,” notes Savonlinna Works’ quality and development manager Antti Janhunen. The Finnish company has proved to be a reliable, high-quality supplier. “We have accumulated the required expertise and our projects have been successful,” Janhunen adds.
The ASME standard sets out requirements for pressure vessel design
North American ASME product standard applies to the design and manufacture of pressure vessels. “Our quality management system is audited every three years. During the audit, we perform a test demonstration and present the quality management system to the audit group,” explains Janhunen. At the design stage, he is supported by Makron’s mechanical design and structural analysis experts.
“We bear the overall responsibility for the accuracy of the design and background data. It is a huge responsibility for a factory as it requires us to know the end client’s processes at the factory where the device will be used. After all, process requirements must be taken into account in the design,” Janhunen emphasizes.
For Janhunen to sign a declaration of compliance with safety and quality requirements in good conscience, he has to be able to trust the drawings and calculations he is provided. “Makron’s designer has been a trusted team member ever since we started working together,” explains Janhunen.
Makron actively maintains its ASME expertise
Antti Janhunen is happy about Makron’s ability to meet ANDRITZ’s needs and to offer reliable pressure vessel drawings. “ASME expertise is relatively rare,” he notes.
One way that ASME differs from European standards is that designers must demonstrate their competency in the design of ASME-compliant pressure vessels. For this, the mechanical designer needs basic training, additional training related to the standard and experience from ASME-compliant projects.
This expertise has to be continuously maintained to ensure it is up to date. Because ANDRITZ does not deliver pressure vessels to North America regularly, it is not cost-efficient for it to maintain in-house ASME-design expertise, particularly as it can acquire the required services from Makron in a flexible manner.
″We need pressure vessel design expertise from Makron, and we have always received it. Makron has considerable know-how in this area.″
