Petri Saarinen | Key Account Manager, Automation

I have worked for Makron Automation since 2001. My first contact with the company (then Elmont) was during my studies at a vocational college when I had a summer job here. First, I worked as an electrician in the electrical control cabinet manufacturing unit. During that time, I gained both basic-level and professional qualifications in automation technology via an apprenticeship program. Later on, I worked as an electrical supervisor and in procurement. Eager to develop my professional skills, I signed up to study mechanical and production engineering at Lahti University of Applied Sciences. With the help of my employer, I was able to combine work and study, working in the electrical control cabinet manufacturing unit throughout my studies. After being certified as an engineer in 2012, I moved into design duties, and a few years later I became a project manager.

Nowadays I work as a key account manager. My current duties involve working with one of our major clients, Evac. I work in close collaboration with the client, and my responsibilities include preparing offers, creating project specifications, and allocating resources.

My earlier experiences have always stood me in good stead when I’ve moved on to new duties. The experience I gained from control cabinet manufacturing provided me with wider perspectives for my work as an electrical designer. Taking over as the key account manager was easy because most of my electrical design projects had been performed for this customer.

My work is challenging and varied. Sometimes I visit the customer's work sites, in various parts of the world. I enjoy this job. I have never felt the need to transfer to a new company, because I’ve been able to advance and gain new responsibilities here. The company has always offered support and encouraged me to study further.

Mikko Peltonen | Design Team Leader, Espoo

I work as a design engineer at Makron, leading a team at the company’s office in Espoo. I didn’t have to think twice about accepting a job at Makron as I was offered a thesis position and a permanent job simultaneously. My job description covers the design of machines and steel structures. For the most part, I work with equipment used in the paper and pulp industry, recovery of chemicals, and recycling processes.

I have a bachelor’s degree in process and materials engineering from the university of applied sciences and I am currently doing a master’s degree at LUT University. Thanks to Makron being very supportive of its employees gaining further training, it has been easy to combine studies and work.

A normal day at work involves 3D modeling and preparing manufacturing drawings. I scrutinize our previous solutions and try to develop new ones. Customers set certain specifications for the project, but I have often been given a free hand in coming up with a solution for the customer’s problem.

Know-how is important in my work. You need expertise in standards and manufacturing methods in this job and you also have to know what materials are available to be able to design a device or structure that is feasible and easy to manufacture.

I like to see the results of my work and to create new solutions. I can apply my problem-solving abilities in this job. Another thing I like about my work is that it varies from day to day. I feel that I have succeeded when I can meet the customer’s needs and come up with a solution to a problem I have been attempting to tackle for some time. Afterwards, it is always nice to look back on a job well done.

Makron has believed in me right from the get-go. I can work independently and communicate with customers directly, which has made interaction easier.

Verneri Väisänen | Business Director, Engineering

I have been working for Makron since 2015, first as a design engineer in Savonlinna, later as a design team leader in Hollola, and now as the business director of Makron Engineering. My educational background is Master of Science in Engineering.

Design engineer's work consists of 3D modeling, making technical drawings, and product development. It means developing machines constantly and every new project is different to the previous one. Design engineers spend their typical day working on a computer and communicating with the customer via e-mail and videoconference. Sometimes they visit the customer’s manufacturing site and have meetings with our customers.

Usually, design engineers are responsible for managing their projects alone, but sometimes we share tasks in larger projects or if the project must be completed in a tight schedule. We are also used to working on several different projects at the same time. A typical industrial project continues for several years and a need for updates may arise after a long time.

Makron has offered me interesting assignments in large international projects and great opportunities for career development.
